Reliving 1971 War: Operation Trident, the first missile attack on Karachi harbour

New Delhi: On this day, 49years ago, one of the most audacious naval operations was undertaken since the Second World War – the attack on Karachi port by India’s Killer Squadron 25.

Navy Day is celebrated to commemorate the Indian Navy’s daring attack on Karachi, and for its overall participation and contribution in the war. The Navy of 1971 was determined to inflict maximum damage on the enemy and win! As PM Gandhi’s letter mentioned, ‘the skill of our Fleet has made a singular contribution to the success of the war on both fronts.

Operation Trident resulted in the first use of anti-ship missiles in the region, as well as the first sinking of naval vessels during hostilities in the region since World War II. India celebrates its Navy Day annually on 4 December to mark this operation.
