Preeti Sudan Appointed as New Chairperson of UPSC

New Delhi, — Retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Preeti Sudan has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The appointment, effective from August 1, 2024, marks a notable chapter in the history of the prestigious institution responsible for conducting civil services examinations in India.

Preeti Sudan, a distinguished 1983 batch officer, previously served as the Health Secretary of India from 2017 to 2020. Her tenure in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was marked by several key initiatives and reforms, particularly during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her experience in public administration and her contributions to the health sector have been widely recognized, making her a well-suited choice for this pivotal role.

The appointment follows the resignation of Manoj Soni, the outgoing Chairperson of UPSC. President Droupadi Murmu accepted Soni's resignation earlier this month. Soni, who had five years remaining in his tenure, stepped down citing personal reasons. His unexpected departure led to a quick selection process for his successor.

Preeti Sudan's appointment is seen as a continuation of the UPSC's commitment to transparency and excellence in the selection of India's civil servants. Her leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the commission, given her extensive background in governance and administration.

The UPSC plays a crucial role in shaping the bureaucracy of the country by selecting candidates for various civil services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS). The commission's decisions impact the future leaders and policymakers of India, making the role of its chairperson highly influential.

As the new Chairperson, Sudan will oversee the functioning of the UPSC and ensure that the commission continues to uphold its high standards of fairness and integrity in the selection process. Her appointment has been met with approval and optimism from various quarters, as she brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the complexities of public service.

Preeti Sudan's leadership will undoubtedly shape the future of India's civil services, and her tenure as Chairperson is anticipated to be a significant period in the commission's history.
