Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association Urges India to Arrest Sheikh Hasina and Return Her to Bangladesh
Dhaka, Bangladesh – The Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has made an urgent appeal to the Indian government, requesting the arrest and extradition of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, back to Bangladesh. This call was made by SCBA President Mahbub Uddin Khokon during a press conference held yesterday.
Khokon expressed a strong desire to maintain amicable relations with India while making the plea. “We want to maintain a good relationship with India,” he stated. However, he went on to make grave allegations against Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of being responsible for numerous deaths in Bangladesh.
"Please arrest Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana, who fled the country, and send them back to Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina has killed many people in Bangladesh," Khokon asserted.
This unprecedented request has sent ripples through both nations, given the complex and often tense political history between Bangladesh and India. Sheikh Hasina, who has been the Prime Minister of Bangladesh since 2009, is widely credited with transforming the country from an underdeveloped nation into a rapidly developing one. Under her leadership, Bangladesh has seen significant economic growth, improvements in infrastructure, and advancements in social development.
However, her tenure has not been without controversy. Critics have accused her administration of human rights abuses, suppression of political opposition, and corruption. These allegations have sparked numerous protests and calls for her resignation over the years, although she has managed to maintain her position and support base.
The SCBA’s plea to India is unprecedented, and it remains unclear how the Indian government will respond. India and Bangladesh share a historically complex relationship, with deep cultural and economic ties but also periods of political friction.
International observers are closely watching this development, as any action taken by India could have significant implications for regional stability and bilateral relations. Human rights organizations and political analysts have expressed concerns over the SCBA’s allegations, calling for a thorough investigation into the claims while also urging caution to avoid escalating tensions further.
As the situation unfolds, the global community awaits India's response to the SCBA's request.
