Fifteen killed as bus falls into river in MP's Khargone

MP, May 9: Tragedy struck Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district on Tuesday as a bus carrying passengers fell into a river, leaving at least 15 people dead and nearly 25 others injured.

The incident took place early in the morning when the bus, which was traveling from Indore to Khargone, lost control and plunged into the river from a bridge. Eyewitnesses said that the bus was overcrowded with passengers, and the driver was speeding at the time of the accident.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene and pulled out the injured and the bodies of the victims from the river. The injured were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem.

According to local authorities, the death toll may rise as several passengers are still missing, and the search operation is underway. The district administration has announced compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 each to the injured.

Expressing his grief over the incident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted, "Saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Khargone. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. I have spoken to the district administration, and all necessary assistance is being provided to the injured."

The incident has once again highlighted the issue of road safety in India, where accidents caused by reckless driving and poor infrastructure are common. The authorities need to take immediate steps to improve road safety and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
